LG explains that display issues killed the Watch Urbane 2nd Edition LTE


The LG Watch Urbane 2nd Edition LTE experienced one of the worst launches in consumer-tech history. Not only did LG have to wait for Google to announce the new version of Android Wear before it could put the watch on sale, but once the Urbane 2nd Edition did start selling, it lasted six days on the market before it was pulled off shelves.

So what happened? The Telegraph reports the problem is related to the watch’s display. In all, it seems the LG Watch Urbane 2nd Edition LTE should never have been released in the first place.

’The potential to reduce image quality’

LG told The Telegraph that the reason it withdrew its smartwatch from sale last week is because of a component “with the potential to reduce image quality on the device.” The South Korean manufacturer was afraid the faulty component would eventually affect user experience over time, which would have ultimately lead to subpar user reviews.

LG went on:

“For competitive and supplier relations reasons we are not in a position to communicate the specifics of the issue that led to this decision. However, what we can share is that the hardware issue was related to a new advanced component that we had incorporated in the device that had never been used in an LG wearable device before.”

There’s no word on whether the Watch Urbane 2nd Edition LTE will go back on sale in time for Christmas.

Why this matters: It’s likely only the hardcore Android faithful will notice the hiccup associated with this particular smartwatch release, but the failed product launch still puts LG in a tough spot. In an effort to beat its competitors to the phone-calls-on-a-Wear-watch punch, it put a smartwatch on sale before it was truly ready—and gained some ugly press in the process. It’s probably for the better that the device was recalled, though, because our first full day with the Watch Urbane 2nd Edition LTE was pretty disappointing.
